Post-Civil War freedoms to be probed at symposium
The North Carolina Office of Archives and History, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and Old Salem are hosting a symposium later this month that will engage 19 presenters in a conversation about freedom and other legacies of the Civil War.

The Oct. 17–18 event will feature an appearance by Dr. Maya Angelou, who will recite a poem, and keynote addresses by Hari Jones of the African American Civil War Museum in Washington, D.C., Ira Berlin of the University of Maryland and Thavolia Glymph of Duke University. Jones will speak at WSSU’s Anderson Center on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. His address is free and open to the public.
Berlin
Presentations, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Wake Forest’s Brendle Recital Hall on Oct. 18, will be given by professors and graduate students and moderators will include Anthony Parent, Michelle Gillespie and Ben Coates of Wake Forest University, Michelle Lanier of the North Carolina Arts Council, William A. Link of the University of Florida, and Paul Kuhl and Eric Greaux of Winston-Salem State. Angelou will speak at 1:15 p.m. There will be more than a dozen workshop topics and presenters, including UNC Chapel Hill’s Heather Williams on “Freedmen’s Post-War Search for Family,” the University of Memphis’ Susan O’Donovan on “Political Views of Slaves,” Radford University’s Sharon Roger Hepburn on “The Men of the 102nd United States Colored Troops” and Appalachian State’s Judkin Browning on “The African American Quest for Autonomy during Military Occupation in North Carolina.”
The event is part of the North Carolina Civil War Sesquicentennial, a series of events marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and highlighting the role the state played in the war. For more information, visit www.nccivilwar150.com.
Registration for the presentations on Oct. 18 is $20 or $10 for students.
