Angelique Reynolds became a high school track and field coach in a round-about kind of way. Her master plan was to run track at Wake Forest University and go to school on an academic scholarship.
Winston-Salem State University Director of Athletics, Tonia Walker, has been named CIAA Athletics Director of the Year.
The Loretta Taylor All-Sports Award, granted to the top women’s athletic program, was earned by Winston-Salem State after winning championship titles in women’s cross country, volleyball, women’s indoor track & field, and softball. The Rams also finished third in outdoor track & field and fourth in tennis of the women’s CIAA championship competitions.
This year, the Rams’ reign as CIAA diamond kings ended in a manner that was shocking and unexpected. WSSU (31-22) breezed through the first two rounds of the conference tournament, but had a crash landing in the final round. In losing twice to Chowan, the Rams surrendered the league crown.
Pape Ndiaye of Quality Education Academy will continue his basketball career at the next level. Ndiaye, a 6-9, 225-pound senior power forward, recently signed a national letter-of-intent with Fordham University (N.Y.). The Rams compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Winston-Salem State University senior wide receiver, Marcel Caver, has been invited to the Detroit Lions rookie mini-camp for a tryout and opportunity to sign a rookie deal.
