Rams give Shaw a lashing
On March 10, for the second straight day, the Winston-Salem State University Rams used a dominating pitching performance to pound out double digit hits en route to a 17-0 blanking of Shaw University.
The win moved the Rams to 15-6 overall, and capped a weekend in which they combined to outscore Shaw University 41-2 in the three game sweep. WSSU won the other games 9-2 and 15-0.
The Rams scored in seven of the eight innings in which they batted, and scored multiple runs in three different innings – five in the first and third, and three in the seventh.
Levi Grassley homered for the second straight day, as he led the offensive attack and finished three for five with three runs scored and four runs batted in. Aaron Jones also finished three for five with three runs scored, and batted in two runs. German Reyes went two for four with two runs scored and three runs batted in, and Paco Martin finished two for five with two runs scored. Brandon Harrison, Chris Constantine, Tyler Hickernell and Christopher Kane all had one RBI. Paco Martin, Jacob Williams, Aaron Jones and Levi Grassley all had doubles in the game.
Kyle Boraski picked up his third win of the season, as the Rams used five pitchers to combine to hold the Shaw Bears to just six hits, one walk and nine strikeouts on the afternoon.
Shaw was led by Todd Sparrow who finished two for four, while Marcquise Phillips, James Edwards, James Jones and Stephen Pigford each collected a hit in the game.
The WSSU Rams had eight different players to hit over .400 for the weekend, and Levi Grassley had the most productive weekend, hitting .615 with eight hits in 16 at-bats, with six runs scored, one double, two home runs and eight RBIs, while slugging at a 1.154 clip. Paco Martin averaged .583 for the weekend, going seven for 12 with seven runs scored, four RBIs and two doubles.
The team will travel to Atlanta this week to take on Morehouse and Clark Atlanta.
