A basketball standout and members of the acclaimed football team are the latest Winston-Salem State University Rams to earn recognition.

Senior forward Amanda Hairston was named the CIAA Newcomer of the Week after leading the Lady Rams to a pair of CIAA wins last week.

For the week, Hairston averaged 12.7 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. She had a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Rams to a 80-65 win over Virginia Union and added 11 points and seven rebounds against Lincoln (Pa.)

Her highest scoring effort of the week came when she scored 17 points against
Edinboro (Pa.) in the team’s final non-conference game of the season.

Sabb

The football defensive duo of Carlos Fields and Donnie Owens, was named to the first team of the 2013 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All Super Region 1 Team, while quarterback Rudy Johnson and offensive lineman Michael Sabb were named to the third team.

Fields was an integral part of the #1 ranked WSSU defensive unit in 2013, as he backed that up with his superior play. In his stellar career, Fields amassed 322 tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss yards, six interceptions, 23 passes broken up, eight quarterback hurries, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. During his time at WSSU, his team went an amazing 45-6 in four years.

Owens finished his WSSU career playing in 41 games over three season, with 153 total tackles to go with 34 tackles for losses, 19.5 sacks, 14 quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Johnson finished the 2013 season with 2,401 passing yards by completing 177 of 280 passes with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Johnson also rushed for 487 yards and six touchdowns. He was also named first team All-CIAA.

Sabb was named first team All-SWAC in 2013, and was one of the key members of the Rams offensive line and helped lead the CIAA in scoring and yards per game.
