Reynolda ‘on the house’ free community event to be held on Sunday
Judie Holcomb-Pack
The community is invited to visit Reynolda “on the house,” an afternoon to explore the historic Reynolda House Museum of American Art at no charge on Sunday, Nov. 17, from 1:30-4:30 p.m.
Enjoy a self-guided tour of the current exhibit,“Founder’s Vision,” and the historic House, along with light refreshments. Celebrate Katharine Reynolds’ life by making a Wayne Thiebaud-inspired birthday cupcake to take home.
“Founder’s Vision” includes works from the private collection of Barbara Babcock Millhouse, the granddaughter of R.J. Reynolds and Katharine Reynolds. Her contributions to the Reynolda House collections represent what may be, as noted on their website, “the greatest gift of fine art in the history of North Carolina.” Over six decades Millhouse has selected paintings she believed “would come to be accepted as iconic works by future generations of Americans.”
Millhouse has also built a significant private art collection, and “Founder’s Vision” celebrates her dedication to American art with an exhibition drawn from her private holdings and features important works by Romare Bearden, Alex Katz, Edward Hopper, Joseph Cornell, Georgia O’Keeffe, and John Singer Sargent, among more than 40 artists from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibit runs through Dec. 31.
Although Reynolda “on the house” is a free event, reservations are requested by going to https://tinyurl.com/4jnns4bz.
