Sigma Beta Club members attend national conference
Special to the Chronicle
Two Sigma Beta Club members, Nasir McDaniel-Moore and Tyrek Thompson, had the opportunity to attend the 2015 National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference of the National Sigma Beta Club Foundation Inc. recently.
The Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. is the sponsoring chapter for the local Sigma Beta Club, a youth auxiliary of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for males ages 8 to 18. The club’s motto is “Next Generation of Leaders Accepting the Responsibility and Loving the Challenge.”
One hundred young men attended the National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference (NSBCLC), which was held on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Arkansas July 15-19. One significant conference workshop with a partnership of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service focused on childhood obesity.
While visiting the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center, Sigma Betas learned about designing an active lifestyle and the connection between outdoor recreation and nature. Outdoor activity helps kids maintain a healthy weight, lowers stress and boosts their immunity and bone health.
The NSBCLC held a Scholarship & Awards Breakfast at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library. During the breakfast, Nasir McDaniel-Moore was awarded the Outstanding SBC Member Award for the Southeastern Region and was one of three (ages 8-13) recognized nationally. Also, public program was held in the historic Central High School Auditorium. Conference attendees gathered to honor the heroic “Little Rock Nine,” who fought for the right for quality education for all Americans. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity presented the school with a monetary donation toward the school’s library during the program.
