Southern music festival starts June 14
Tickets are now on sale for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ Music Academy of the American South (MAAS), a weekend festival that will be held from June 14 – June 16 at UNC School of the Arts and Old Salem Museums & Gardens.
The festival will include dynamic performances and workshops by noted musicians. A focus in MAAS programming for 2013 is the interactions of American roots music (bluegrass, blues, folk, gospel and Moravian music) with one another as well as with other genres.
The weekend festival kicks off with the “The Household Muse: Salem Composers of the 19th Century” on Friday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Home Moravian Church in Old Salem. It will feature Hannah Carter, Mary Siebert, Glenn Siebert, Jason McKinney, Susan Foster and Barbara Lister-Sink.
Other highlights include a June 15 concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gerald Freedman Theatre at Performance Place on the UNCSA campus that will feature The Kruger Brothers, Jim Lauderdale, The Amigos Band and Muscle Shoals; and a June 16 at 3 p.m. at UNCSA’s Performance Place Patrons Theatre, there will be a Blues Summit with Logie Meachum, Big Ron Hunter and Boo Hanks. It will be followed by a collaborative jam/recording session. An Informal Jam Session will be held at 6 p.m. at the St. Phillips Heritage Center at Old Salem.
