Spartans earn All-SoCon honors
UNCG Freshmen Lydia Saina earned All-Southern Conference honors to lead three Spartans to All-Freshman accolades in day two of the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships in Statesboro, Ga., hosted by Georgia Southern at Eagle Field.
Saina turned in the Spartans’ top performance of the championships, earning the honors in the 5,000-meter distance Sunday. She finished third overall in the distance, turning in a personal-best time of 17:26.71.
Freshman Katherine Link earned All-Freshman honors in the 5,000-meter race as well when she placed 11th in the race. Link turned in a personal-best time of 18:05.90, trimming over 11 seconds off her previous top time of 18:17.58 set at the Raleigh Relays. Freshman Eira Jensen also earned league accolades in the 1,500-meter distance. Jensen, who ran in the second section, won her heat and finished seventh overall with a personal-best time of 4:40.60.
UNCG Men also earned honors. Sophomore Paul Katam earned All-SoCon honors in the 1,500-meter race, marking his second All-League honor of her outdoor career after winning the 10,000-meter race at last year’s championship. Freshman Joshua Crawford earned SoCon All-Freshman accolades in the 1,500-meter race after placing 13th overall with a time of 3:57.91.
UNCG will travel to the Payton Jordan Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. this coming weekend for the first of three events leading up to the NCAA East Regional held in Greensboro on the campus of N.C. A&T May 23-25.
