Sheriff Kimbrough: “We’ve done this too many times in our community … “

Local law enforcement is still searching for answers after a student was shot on the campus of Reynolds High School earlier this week. The victim in the shooting is recovering in a local hospital; the shooter is still at large.

Here’s what we know: At about 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, law enforcement responded to a shooting at Reynolds High School. Upon arrival, law enforcement located a male student who attends Reynolds suffering with a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he is recovering. It was later reported that the shooting happened following a fight.

At the time of the shooting, about 400 students were on campus and they were escorted to the gym for safety purposes. Students were later reunited with families in the parking lot of Harris Teeter a few blocks away on Cloverdale Avenue. Nearby Wiley Middle School and Brunson Elementary were also placed on lockdown.

During a press conference on Wednesday morning, Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough said this has happened too many times and that it’s almost become routine how to handle these situations. In recent years there has been a rise in the number of violent crimes involving juveniles. In 2022 a student was shot and killed inside Mt. Tabor High School, which is less than five miles from Reynolds.

“Things ran so smoothly yesterday that it was scary and it reminded me that we’ve done this too many times in our community, a shooting in our community, we’ve done this too many times,” Kimbrough continued. “I want you to know that as a community, we are better than this, we got to get better in terms of the shooting incidents.”

The shooting remains under investigation, with no suspects in custody as of Thursday morning. Sheriff Kimbrough stated that law enforcement is actively searching for the individual or individuals involved.

To help with the investigation, Assistant Chief Manny Gomez with the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD), has encouraged citizens to register their cameras, Ring doorbells and other devices with the department’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC) Camera Registry Program.

Through this program, businesses and residents have the option to share the location of their security cameras with the Police Department. Sharing does not mean the department will have access to your camera and there is no additional cost involved with sharing camera locations. The Police Department will not share your information with anyone else, and will only contact you if a crime occurs in your neighborhood.

“A small thing you can do is make sure you register your cameras with the Real Time Crime Center … so we can have access to certain camera feeds that prove vital when we investigate these kinds of incidents.”
