The Big Chill returns to Bailey Park to celebrate National Ice Cream Day
The Big Chill is one of the community’s most anticipated and exciting fundraising events of the year. On July 19, 3-6 p.m. at Bailey Park, The Shalom Project will host a huge ice cream themed celebration, complete with live music, food trucks, face painting, and more. This family-friendly fundraiser supports the work of The Shalom Project of Green Street Church.
A dozen or more community organizations and faith groups will prepare gallons of homemade ice cream for event- goers to enjoy, and at the end of the event, celebrity judges will determine which homemade ice cream is the winner. Event attendees can also vote for their favorite ice cream by donating at that group’s station or on their event fundraising page. The ice cream with the most money raised by the end of the event is crowned with the “People’s Choice” award. To donate to a favorite charity or community group, go to https://theshalomprojectnc.org/the-big-chill and click on the Donate button.
The “chill” part of The Big Chill is our “Cold Callers” or ice sitters. They are the folks who take turns sitting on large blocks of ice and calling friends, family, coworkers, and others, encouraging them to donate to The Shalom Project. Last July Cold Callers raised over $35,000 to support the programs and client families of The Shalom Project. You can go to their website and click on a name to make a gift to the Cold Caller of your choice.
Officially a 501(c)(3) since 2006, The Shalom Project has grown from its early days serving the West Salem neighborhood of Winston-Salem to the organization it is today. In addition to their efforts to assist with the basic needs of medical care, clothing and food, The Shalom Project also oversees long-term initiatives to engage with and involve the community in their efforts to reduce poverty and improve our city.
Their mission is to serve and support those in our community who have been systematically disenfranchised and oppressed through their outreach programming, education and advocacy. For more information, visit https://theshalomprojectnc.org.
