Tonight, April 28, the WS/FCS Board of Education will be holding a special meeting to discuss their process in finding an interim superintendent following current Superintendent Tricia McManus’ earlier retirement announcement. The meeting will take place at 5 p.m.

Tomorrow, April 29, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district will be hosting a Strategic Plan Town Hall meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Mount Tabor High School. During the meeting, there will be discussion on further details about the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan they intend to implement to better reform their current systems in place.

Also, on Tuesday night, the Outreach Committee of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church will hold its seventh annual Freedom School Fundraiser at Incendiary Brewing. From 4 to 7 p.m., there will be an open mic night to help raise funds to support the “Roddy Roberts School of Rock” at the Old Town Freedom School and the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools organization. The event is free to the public and will feature local artists and musicians from the Triad area.

This Thursday, May 1, Authoring Action and The Dwelling will present a retrospective engagement of the first two years of their creative partnership. The Dwelling is located at 502 N. Broad St. and is an ecumenical church dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness in Winston-Salem. The event will feature poignant and powerful monologues, poems, and songs.

On Friday, May 2, the Arboretum Volunteers and Educators at Tanglewood Park will host their annual spring plant sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Selections include herbaceous perennials, flowering shrubs and trees, native plants, milkweed, annuals, herbs, and more. New for this year are carnivorous plants. Proceeds from these sales help maintain the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park and fund the monthly Adult Education lecture series held at Tanglewood throughout the year. The Arboretum Volunteers and Educators at Tanglewood organize this fundraiser to support the N.C. State Extension Master Gardener℠ (EMG) program in Forsyth County. Sales will be cash or check only.

For those looking to grow a green thumb to help make a difference in the community, The Chronicle will highlight various volunteer opportunities around town.

One of these organizations, Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful, will host its first Cardboard Boat Regatta at Salem Lake this Saturday, May 3. To promote recycling and the reduction of waste in Winston-Salem, contestants will build boats out of cardboard, duct tape, and water-soluble paint to race across the lake.
