Tickets for “Crowns” on sale
The North Carolina Black Repertory Company will conclude its 34th season of providing professional theater to the Triad with “Crowns,” from April 19-21. This musical play, written by Regina Taylor, was inspired by the book “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats,” by Craig Marberry and Michael Cunningham. The book features a series of black and white photographs of Winston-Salem women taken by Cunningham; Marberry tells the women’s intriguing and personal stories.
The play is the story of a young African American girl who learns about herself and life lessons from the wit and wisdom of strong-willed women who religiously wear their church “crowns.” It is directed by Broadway veteran Mabel Robinson with Tony Gillion as music director. It will be performed at The Arts Council Theatre, 610 Coliseum Drive.
