Tiny Rams on fire heading to playoffs
The Tiny Rams proved to be supreme during the regular season in the 8th Grade Unlimited Division of the Piedmont Youth Football and Cheer League. The Rams handled all opposition and posted a perfect 8-0 record.
Offensive balance and suffocating defense paved the way for the Rams’ dominance. Anthony Hicks, Braxton Rorie and Mashion Powell are the key contributors on offense. The Garnes twins – Mahliek and Tahliek – provide solid production as two-way performers.
Now that the regular season is over, the Rams turn their attention to the postseason. The opening round of the league playoffs starts on Saturday and the league championship games for all divisions are scheduled for Nov. 2.
Based on regular-season results, the No. 1 seeded Rams appear to be headed for a showdown with the Durham Titans, who are seeded second for the playoffs.
In the Junior Midgets Division, look for the Tiny Rams and Tiny Indians to make it to the championship game. The Rams went undefeated and handed the Indians their only loss. The Indians are eager for a rematch. However, the South Fork Panthers and Grayhounds have the talent to pull off some upsets in the playoffs.
In the Pee Wee Division, the Pfafftown Packers (7-0) ran the table and are viewed as strong candidates to win this year’s league championship. That’s not to say the Packers are a lock to win. They will face stiff challenges from the Tiny Indians, Panthers and Tiny Rams.
Pairings for the playoffs were not available at presstime, but were expected to be finalized by mid-week and posted on the league’s web site at http://pyfcl.com .
League champions will advance to the American Youth Football League state championships, which will be played in Winston-Salem on Nov. 9. The state champion will advance to the AYFL Atlantic Regionals set for Nov. 16 in Virginia Beach, Va. Regional winners earn a trip to the AYFL National Tournament to be played in Orlando, Fla. in December.
