Wake Forest School of Medicine is the fourth most selective medical school in the country, according to a ranking released this week by U.S. News & World Report.

The School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, had an acceptance rate of 3.1 percent for the class that entered in the fall of 2012, admitting 256 of 8,161 applicants. Only George Washington University’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences (2.1 percent), Mayo Medical School (2.1 percent) and Stanford University School of Medicine (2.8 percent) had lower acceptance rates, U.S. News found.

The average acceptance rate at American medical schools for fall 2012 was 8.3 percent, according to data reported by 140 institutions in an annual U.S. News survey.

Wake Forest School of Medicine was followed in the ranking by the medical schools of Brown (3.4 percent), Georgetown (3.4 percent), Harvard (3.9 percent), the University of California-San Francisco (3.9 percent), Columbia (4.1 percent) and UCLA (4.1 percent).
