WS/FCS Superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory tendered her resignation to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education this afternoon during a special called meeting. State Superintendent Mark Johnson was on-hand to announce that Emory will join the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as the new Director of District and Regional Support.

“I know this was a difficult decision for Dr. Emory, but it is wonderful news for the students and educators of North Carolina. I am pleased that we will gain the expertise of such a well-respected superintendent in a position where her wealth of experience and passion will truly make a difference for schools and districts across the entire state,” says Johnson.

Emory told the board and staff today, “It is with mixed emotions that I share that I have accepted a leadership position with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with our State Superintendent, DPI colleagues and district leaders to create a statewide system of support for schools in North Carolina. After 25 years serving as a superintendent, I hope that my experiences and insights can be of value and support to schools and districts in this new role of Director of District and Regional Support.”

Emory shared with members of the board that she will work with them in whatever way possible to ensure a smooth and successful transition of leadership.

“The decision to leave WS/FCS and the incredible students, staff and community is extremely difficult. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve this school system and words fall short in capturing the unprecedented support system this community has provided to our schools. I am so grateful for all that has been accomplished on behalf of children in our schools and community. WS/FCS will forever hold a special place in my heart,” she says.

Emory shared, “My prayer is that new leadership can bring new energy and excitement around the challenging work that lies ahead. I have no doubt that our staff, community, and Board of Education are equipped for the challenges. They have the best interests of all of our children as their mandate. My pledge and commitment is to work tirelessly with our Board of Education to ensure a smooth transition. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your superintendent for nearly 6 years. I am humbled and honored to have served with and for you.”

Emory started with WS/FCS in March of 2013 making her the sixth superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. She came to Forsyth County from Pitt County Schools, where she served as superintendent from 2006 to 2013. She also spent six years as the superintendent of Oberlin City School District in Oberlin, Ohio. Her initial superintendent experience was in Westlake City School District in Westlake, Ohio. Dr. Emory has also spent considerable time as a principal, central office administrator and adjunct university professor, and she began her career teaching science and math at West McDowell Junior High School in McDowell County, North Carolina.
