WS/FCS Board of Education swears in 3 incumbent, 6 new members
Jan. 5 marked the beginning of a new era for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Three incumbent members and six new members were sworn in by retired District Court Judge Denise Hartsfield while standing in front of a packed auditorium last Thursday evening, officially starting the term for the newly elected board.
Returning board members are Alex Bohannon, Leah Crowley, and Deanna Kaplan. Newcomers are Robert Barr, Trevonia Brown-Gaither, Sabrina Coone-Godfrey, Susan Miller, Richard Watts, and Steve Woods.
Before leading the oath of office, Hartsfield wished the new board luck. Hartsfield had board members say parts of the oath together to show unity. “I’m going to ask that you state certain parts together because if ever there was a need for unity, it’s this board,” Hartsfield continued.
“I am honored to be here to do this; I am ecstatic about what this board holds for the kids of Forsyth County and I am determined to help in any way that I can.”
Val Young, president of the Forsyth County Association of Educators (FCAE), also wished the new board luck and vowed to work with the board to make WS/ FCS better for all students, parents, teachers, and staff.
“The Forsyth County Association of Educators has advocated for a great, quality education for all students. To that end we would like to recommit ourselves to the task that we will work together,” Young continued. “We may not always agree with each other, but we work together to make this the best possible district for our students.”
After the new board was sworn in, Deanna Kaplan was voted board chair and Alex Bohannon was voted vice chair. For more information, visit https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/ and click on the Board of Education tab.
