SSAAH adds tennis memorabilia
Dr. James Ewers, a native of Winston-Salem, has donated several of his sports accolades to the Society for the Study of Afro-American History.
Dr. Ewers was a top rated tennis player at Atkins High School and Johnson C. Smith University. Along with various tennis trophies and a picture of him with Serena Williams, he also gave the plaque he recently received when the tennis courts at Atkins Science and Technology High School were named in his honor.
While at Atkins, Ewers won back-to-back district titles, finishing second in the state as a senior. At JCSU, he was all-conference for four years and holds the record of having won 34 consecutive singles matches. The streak includes wins over Purdue and Northwestern Universities. The Society, which promotes and preserves local black history, houses its archives at the New Winston Museum on South Marshall St., where a future sports-related display is planned.
Ewers recently announced his retirement from Jacksonville, Fla.-based Edward Waters College, where he is vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. Ewers’ career in high education has spanned 40 years.
