Latonya Black, a former Greensboro resident who performed with the N.C. Black Repertory Co. in the 1980s, has taken her love for performance to the “left coast.”

She is the founder and artistic director of the Los Angeles-based Revelation Repertory Theatre Company, which provides a stage and venue for playwrights, singers, dancers and musicians to enhance their talents and freely express themselves.

Revelation’s first performance, a showcase, is slated to take place on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Sherry Theatre in North Hollywood.
The showcase will include excerpts from dramas “The Meeting,” “On The Count” and “Loveseat,” along with snippets from the musical “Pippin.” Performers will also pay special tribute to Broadway sensation Ben Vereen, who is a mentor to Black and the Revelation Repertory Theatre Company.
Black said she hopes to share some of what she learned at the Black Rep with artists on the West Coast, where theater still takes a backseat to film and television.

“Revelations are something that we need. We need entertainment; we need enlightenment. And we need to smile, and theater is such a great way to express them,” she said.
