THE CHRONICLE
Last weekend all 14 high schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) held graduation ceremonies for the class of 2016. According to WS/FCS, more than 3,000 seniors walked across the stage and into the life of adulthood during various ceremonies held Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
While delivering the commencement address to the graduating class at Carver High School, 97.1 WQMG on-air personality Busta Brown told the class of 2016 that it’s time to get it done. As they waited patiently to receive their diplomas inside the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex on Saturday afternoon, Brown said, “Never envy or compare yourself with another person’s greatness.
“The only person you compare yourself to is the person you were yesterday,” he continued. “When you compare your great-ness to another person’s greatness, you may miss that you took a step forward.”
Other schools that held graduation ceremonies on Saturday were, John F. Kennedy, North Forsyth, R.J. Reynolds, Walkertown, Reagan, East Forsyth and Parkland. When describing his fellow classmates during his speech, Parkland valedictorian Roark McLean quoted rapper Drake when describing the journey through high school.
“We started from the bottom now we’re here,” said McLean. “It has been a long hard journey but we made it. I know there are great plans for all of us as we move forward in life.”
Graduation exercises for Mt. Tabor, Atkins, Carter, Glenn and West Forsyth were held on Friday, June 10. Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy capped off the weekend of celebration on Sunday, June 12, during a ceremony held at K.R. Williams Auditorium on the campus of Winston-Salem State University.
