Mable Stevenson receives North Carolina Central University alumni Founder’s Award

A local Eagle “soared” at the ninth Awards Dinner on Saturday, July 13, in Durham. Mrs. Mable Hicks Stevenson, a 1963 graduate of then North Carolina College (now NCCU), was honored as the recipient of the Founder’s Award. This award is the highest recognition given to deserving alumni.
Stevenson’s recognition is well-deserved. She is a member of the Winston-Salem Chapter of North Carolina Central University Alumni Association (NCCU AA) and works diligently for her alma mater in every aspect of involvement. Stevenson is a retired social worker with numerous professional accolades and even more numerous as an alumnus.
As an alumnus, Stevenson worked in the Atlanta, Georgia chapter of the NCCU AA where she served three terms as president. Moving to Wilson, N.C., she was instrumental in establishing an alumni chapter there and served two years as president. On the regional level, she has served as vice president of Region III and as the assistant vice president of Region III. Stevenson was a two-term at-large National Council Member; a member of the Shepard Society and Eagle Club; 1994 National Alumnus of the Year; 2003 Ms. Alumni; 2004 Annual Award of Excellence recipient in Region III; Life member of NCCU AA; and is a charter and current member of the NCCU Alumni Choir. The Alumni Choir was created in 2010 for the centennial celebration of the University, where she took a leadership role.
On professional and personal levels, Stevenson has received recognition for her work in civic, volunteer and community activities because of her former employment as a social worker, as a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and an Alumna Member of the Links, Inc.
Stevenson loves to sing and is a member of Voices of God’s Children community choir. Other community involvement includes having served as a therapeutic counselor to high school students in summer programs and on the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness. She still volunteers at local elementary schools and gives of her time to the local chapter in whatever capacity she is needed – former president, chair of fundraising, membership chair.
Stevenson is the wife of Reverend Dr. Samuel Stevenson, pastor emeritus of Grace Presbyterian Church, and is the mother of a lovely daughter, Joy, and her husband Donnell. She is “Nana” to her handsome grandsons, Jeffery and Jalon.
The Winston-Salem Chapter of NCCU AA is proud to honor our well-deserved chapter member. We salute her as the Alumni Founder’s Honoree of 2019.
