North Carolina A&T State University senior Emmanuel Johnson is headed to graduate school at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

The computer engineering major has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Award.  The first N.C. A&T student to receive the award, Johnson  will use the award to pursue a one-year master’s degree in robotics beginning in September. He received the only University of Birmingham Fulbright Award available during this cycle.

The North Carolina A&T Fulbright Campus Committee recommended Johnson out of this year’s pool of 10 interested students. Committee members include N.C. A&T faculty and staff members Dr. Paula Faulkner, Dr. Sarita Jackson, Dr. Deborah Barnes,

Anna Whiteside, Allegra Laing and Minnie Battle-Mayes. Faulkner and Jackson are both former Fulbright awardees.
The Fulbright Program is an international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government that is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”

The program has provided almost 310,000 participants – chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential – with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

While at N.C. A&T, Johnson has served as the president of the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.  He has also served on the Chancellor’s Academic Review Commission and the Regional Board of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). The student has maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.7 throughout his academic career.

The Office of International Programs will recognize Johnson at the Global Studies Certificate Program Awards Ceremony in the Academic Classroom Building on Friday, May 10 from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
