Atkins hands out year-end honors
More than 500 parents and students shared a meal in the Atkins High School gym on May 23 during the school’s Second Annual Varsity Letterman Banquet.
Nearly 300 students earned varsity letters in athletic and academic competitions.
Freshman Twylah Gaithings began the evening with a musical performance. The award-winning Atkins JROTC presented the colors, with freshman Tiffany Ashton Bramblett singing the national anthem. Other entertainment for the evening included a violin performance by freshman Jose Olea Vico and a dance performance by Irvin Alonzo-Nava. Superintendent Donald Martin was the keynote speaker.
Key tributes during the evening went to the school’s conference championship-winning Boys’ Swim Team and Technology Student Association for winning various competitions throughout the year. The team will compete this month in a national competition in Orlando, Fla.
Football and track star Mario King was recognized as the outstanding male athlete. Zhane Legrant, who plays basketball and softball, was named the outstanding female athlete.
Tumi Mabaso was recognized as the outstanding female scholar. Her achievements included participation on the NCASA Quiz Bowl team. John Henry Jackson was recognized as the outstanding male scholar. He helped the school’s math team place third in the Winston-Salem State University Mathematics Face-off.
