Taste of the South…at Home 2020

On Thursday, November 19, Authoring Action will host its 11th annual Taste of the South fundraising event.   Because of COVID 19, our event will be structured differently. The 2020 event is entitled Taste of the South at Home.

Participants will drive through and pick up their tastings in the parking lot at Bib’s Downtown at 675 W. 5th Street in Winston Salem between 4-6:30 p.m.

In addition, we will host a virtual online entertainment program at 7 p.m. that evening – it will be available for viewing throughout the evening.

With local Southern Cuisine tastings provided by favorite downtown restaurants, community supporters like you will gather virtually to gain insight into our “Just Us” juvenile justice program and enjoy special spoken word and musical performances by our Alumni Renaissance Authors, including Jimmie “JJ” Jeter, a Broadway cast member of Hamilton; Dionna Daniel, actor/vocalist/playwright/associate artist at Pasadena Playhouse, California; and Tony Jenkins, actor/playwright/director in NYC.

This year’s tasting line-up includes Bib’s Downtown, 6th & Vine Wine Bar and Restaurant, Finnigan’s Wake Irish Pub & Kitchen, Jeffrey Adams, Lavender & Honey Kitchen, The Porch Kitchen and Cantina, Simply Soul Restaurant, Village Tavern Coupon, Young Cardinal Cafe and Co., and Y’all Sauce Company.

“I’ve watched the wonderful work of Authoring Action for years,” says Kathleen Barnes, owner of 6th & Vine Wine Bar and Restaurant, “I’m also an art history professor by day and restaurant owner by night. I believe the arts can be used to teach and inspire teens to learn about themselves and other cultures.”

Robert Moreau of Bib’s Downtown shares, “From the beginning, before we ever opened, we knew in our hearts that we wanted to be a part of the Downtown Winston-Salem community. Part of our local community spirit is a commitment to participating in those events around us. Winston-Salem is the City of Arts & Innovation, and Authoring Action embodies that spirit by teaching teens to harness the power of creative writing and performance to become agents of change in our community.”

One hundred percent of the proceeds of Taste of the South impact not only the lives of individual youth but also our community as a whole, because through Authoring Action’s programs, local teen authors are empowered to become community leaders and advocates for social courage and change.

An additional feature will be a live Fund the Need appeal for the Just Us Program. This writing and film program works with teens both at-risk of and already involved in the judicial system.

The Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC) of Forsyth County provides 70% funding for Just Us, and a 30% match is supported by our community, through the Fund the Need appeal.

Join the Authoring Board, Judge Denise Hartsfield, David Scruggs, Staff and Renaissance authors in support of Authoring Action as a preventative and productive program for teens.

Spend the evening at home enjoying Southern food tastings, dynamic and moving performances and a chance to support local teen authors and the Just Us program provided by Authoring Action.

Event tickets can be purchased online at www.authoringaction.org/events for $50.

Sponsor packages also available.

Harnessing the power of creative writing and performance art, Authoring Action engages and trains young people to author their lives, rather than be victims of their circumstances. In partnership with professional artists, writers and mentors, teens learn to take ownership of their educational success and become agents for community building, social courage and change, as well as positive messages to their peers.

Authoring Action is a 501 (c)(3) Charitable Organization (EIN 38-3707584, NC Solicitation License Number SL006062).
