Earlier this week the owners of the Charlotte Hornets, Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, announced their support for a bid to bring back the state’s WNBA franchise.

In a statement sent to WCNC Charlotte on Monday, Hornets Sports & Entertainment said it would support the push to bring back the Charlotte Sting.

The statement read: “Hornets Sports & Entertainment believes strongly in the future growth of women’s basketball and the WNBA. The Charlotte Sting has a storied history and a passionate fanbase within our community. We are proud to back the Berman family and be a part of this larger group that is bidding to bring the WNBA back to Charlotte.”

The Charlotte Sting franchise was a part of the league from 1997 to 2007. Although they weren’t in the league for very long, the Sting was always competitive. In 2001 they made the WNBA Finals and were a regular in the playoffs, appearing six of their last seven seasons.

Along with Hornets ownership, the bid is being led by businesswoman Erica Berman and her family. If the bid is approved by the investment bank handling the WNBA expansion, the Sting could begin play at Spectrum Center as early as 2028.
