Training women of all parties to win elections

Quamekia Shavers is proud to announce her acceptance into the esteemed Campaign School at Yale, set to take place from June 9 to 13 in New Haven, Connecticut. This exclusive five-day summer session selects only 80 individuals from across the nation for an intensive, non-partisan training experience designed to empower future leaders.

During the program, Shavers will gain critical skills and insights essential for navigating the complexities of modern political campaigns, learning from seasoned experts representing both major political parties. The curriculum will particularly focus on the unique challenges women encounter when seeking elected office, including effective fundraising strategies, campaign safety, and the financial aspects of running for office.

Although women have made strides, they still face underrepresentation in political roles. In the North Carolina state legislature, African American women account for 5.4% of all state legislators and 16.2% of all female state legislators. While they constitute a significant portion of women in the legislature, their representation remains low relative to their percentage of the overall population. The Campaign School at Yale is committed to training women – and the men who support their efforts – to secure elected positions.

Shavers embodies the new generation of women who understand how to lead in a less ego-driven and more collaborative manner,” remarked Patricia (Patti) Russo, executive director of The Campaign School at Yale. Women lead differently, and we need strong, passionate women like Shavers in office to help bridge the bipartisan divide that has been troubling our government.”

As an African American woman from the east side of Winston-Salem, Shavers is thrilled about the opportunity to attend Yale University. She aspires to run for office in the future and address the inequities and challenges faced by the constituents of Winston-Salem.
