The Bennett College Board of Trustees is hosted a naming ceremony today (Aug. 28) for the Pfeiffer Heating Plant that houses the Journalism and Media Studies Program. The Julianne Malveaux Journalism and Media Studies Building was unveiled following the College’s ceremony of matriculation for new students, Convocatum Est.

As the 15th President of Bennett College, Dr. Malveaux was the architect of an exciting and innovative transformation at Bennett College, America’s oldest historically black college for women. During her tenure, the administration focused on four key areas for development: women’s leadership, entrepreneurship, excellence in communications, and global awareness. She led the successful 10-year reaffirmation of Bennett College’s accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; noticeably improved existing facilities including the renovation of the Pfeiffer Heating Plant; and embarked on a $21 million capital improvements program – marking the first major campus construction in more than 25 years and included the Wellness Complex, the Martin Dixon Intergenerational Center/Children’s House, a 144-bed honors residence hall, and the Global Learning Center which has a 200-seat auditorium, classroom space, and space the community uses for special events.

Malveaux, a nationally-recognized economist, left Bennett in 2012 after five years as president to focus on writing and lecturing. She has also lectured at more than 500 colleges and corporate events. For the last 5 years Dr. Malveaux has focused and centered her efforts on public speaking appearances and her work as a broadcast and print / journalist and author. Her books include “Sex, Lies, and Stereotypes: Perspectives of a Mad Economist” and “Wall Street, Main Street, and the Side Street: A Mad Economist Takes a Stroll.”

Current President Rosalind Fuse-Hall will led the ceremony.
