A campaign this month aims to raise $10,000 to purchase much-needed instruments for the Carver High School band.

Rudolph V. Boone Sr., a former Carver band director and retired music educator, is coordinating the campaign, which will conclude with a benefit concert on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. in the Carver High School Auditorium. Tickets to the concert are $5 per person.

“We are asking the entire community to support this need with contributions,” said Boone, who is also seeking the talents of seasoned musicians for the concert.

Musicians, singers and groups who would like to volunteer their time and talent are asked to contact Boone at rvb0720@aol.com or 336-767-4087. A few celebrity emcees are also needed to introduce the acts.

The campaign features a variety of giving levels, including “Whole Note” ($1,000), “Half Note” ($500), “Quarter Note” ($100), “Eighth Note” ($50) and “Sixteenth Note” ($25).

Churches are asked to allow members to give freewill donations to the cause on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Carver Band Director Juan M. Eckard appealed for community help shortly before the start of the school year. Eckard said band members are using out of date and damaged instruments and that equipment is in short supply.

Steven Floyd is president of the Carver Band Boosters. Gilda Smith is the treasurer. Ronald L. Travis is the school’s principal.
