The Carver High School Alumni Association, Inc. held its 28th Carver Yellow Jacket Round Up during the week of Aug. 21. The honored guests were members of the Class of 1962.

Founder’s Day opened the week of events; it gave the history of Carver High School. Greetings came from Alumni Association President Malishai Woodbury; Carver Principal Ronald Travis and Keith Flutt, a Carver student. Special guests included Mayor Pro-Tempore Dr. Vivian H. Burke; School Board Member Victor Johnson; Assistant Superintendent Carol Montague-Davis; Carver Valedictorian from 1939 Sarah F. Hamlin; and State Rep. Earline  Parmon.

Kermit Sprinkle gave a presentation from the Class of 1962.  Odell Tillery, co-president of the Class of ’62, was presented with a plaque for his devotion to the CHS Alumni Association.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, the Class of ’62 had lunch together and toured the Oak Grove School in Old Town. The next night, they took part in Hospitality Night at the Hawthorne Inn. The Dinner/Dance and Roll Call was held on Aug. 25 at the Hawthorne Inn. Arthur Gray of Gray and Gray DJs  provided the music. Guests enjoyed reflections from the Class of 1962, and class members were presented with a letter from Mayor Allen Joines and a certificate from the Alumni Association.

During the Roll Call, the Class of 1962 presented the Alumni Association with a gift of $6,200 for its Scholarship Fund.

On Sunday, Aug. 26, a worship service was held at Carver with featured speaker Rev. Dorothy Conrad Kelly, pastor of the Mainville A.M.E. Zion Church of Mocksville and a member of the Class of 1962. Music was provided by the CHS Alumni Choir, under the direction of Peggy McCullough.

Officers of the Class of 1962 are Odell Tillery and Mary C. Willis, co-presidents; Ruby Charles and Eugene Campbell, co-vice presidents; Secretary Roberta Blue; Assistant Secretary Donnie Warren; Treasurer Emma Rice; Financial Secretary Anna Partlow; Parliamentarian Cornell Gwyn; and Chaplain Rev. Dorothy C. Kelly.

The Class of 1962 is making plans to celebrate their 70th birthday together in two more years.

Carver alums Cornell Gwyn, Luther Lowery, Jerome Watson, Odell Tillery, Donnie Warren, Tommy Oliver, Kermit Sprinkle, Leon Scales, Alvin Glenn, Eugene Campbell and Benny Golden.
