The second Clark G. Hanner Jr. Community Uplift Walk will be held Saturday.

In 2011, one year after Clark Hanner Jr.’s untimely death, the First Baptist Church and the Bethesda Center partnered for the first Community Uplift Walk in honor of Hanner, a Bethesda employee who also attended First Baptist.

Hanner is remembered as a passionate young man who was committed to helping his community and providing a hand-up to those in need.
The walk also honored the late Louise Smith, a longtime educator who started a summer camp at First Baptist in the 1960s. Smith also created the first public kindergarten in Winston-Salem.

Proceeds from the walk will benefit Bethesda’s many programs for the homeless and the Louise Smith Summer Adventure Camp of First Baptist Church.
Saturday’s walk starts at 9 a.m. (registration starts at 8 a.m.) at First Baptist, 700 N. Highland Ave. Walkers will proceed up Highland to Shiloh Baptist Church, turn down Liberty Street and then onto Patterson Avenue to the Bethesda Center. Walkers will then return to the church. More than 200 walkers took part in 2011. Organizers are expecting just as many this year.

The registration fee is $30 for adults and $15 for youngsters under 8. The fee includes a commemorative t-shirt, lunch and outside games for kids.
