Dr. Jon Sensbach examines the history of St. Philips Moravian Church; one of the oldest African-American congregations in the nation
Dr. Jon Sensbach, teacher of early American history at the University of Florida and the author of Rebecca’s Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World and A Separate Caanan: The Making of an Afro-Moravian World in North Carolina; will lecture at Trinity Moravian Church, on Thursday June 16th, during the 250th anniversary if Salem.
Dr. Sensbach’s lecture will take a closer look the St. Philips Moravian Church, one of the oldest African-American congregations in the nation; and how it endured for nearly two centuries, as well as the churches origins during the heart of shifting race relations in the Moravian community.
His lecture also illuminates the African-American struggle for self-determination and complex white attitudes towards the black church in America. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A.
