Interim President William L Roper, University of North Carolina System, recently presided over the installation of Elizabeth City State University Chancellor Dr. Karrie Dixon.

Chancellor Dixon was named 12th chief executive officer and 7th chancellor of Elizabeth City State University on Dec. 14, 2018. Oct. 11 marked her formal installation as chancellor.

On behalf of Governor Roy Cooper, Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall and Secretary of Revenue Ronald G. Penny presented Chancellor Dixon with The Old North State Award. The Old North State Award, one of the highest honors granted North Carolinians, is awarded to “individuals who have shown dedication and service beyond exception and excellence to the Great State of North Carolina.” Individuals receiving the award must have at least 20 years of service to the State of North Carolina.

ECSU alumnus and North Carolina State Representative Zack Hawkins and North Carolina Senator Robert Steinburg provided greetings and reinforced their support of ECSU as an economic engine in northeastern North Carolina. 

UNC Board of Governors’ member Harry Smith represented the Board of Governors in honoring Chancellor Dixon and sharing the support of the Board of Governors.

Former ECSU Chancellor and President of Livingstone College Dr. Jimmy R. Jenkins. recited his mantra: “If you look to the northeast, you will see a rising star. And that star is Elizabeth City State University.” He also presented a certificate of commendation from Livingstone College. 

In her remarks, Chancellor Dixon stated it is her “honor to accept the stewardship of Elizabeth City State University. This institution has transformed lives, strengthened communities, and contributed to economic growth in northeastern North Carolina for 128 years.

“Our theme for this academic year is ECSU Is Rising! We are stronger. We are wiser. We are better. We are the Mighty Vikings!

“I am grateful and humbled that you would entrust the care of this institution into my hands, my head and my heart.”
