George R. Johnson Jr., dean of Elon University School of Law, will be the keynote speaker for Bennett College’s Charter Day Convocation, an observance of the 124th anniversary since its chartering as a four-year institution by the state of North Carolina.

Free and open to the public, the event will be held on Thursday, March 14 at 11 a.m. in the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel.

A member of the school’s founding faculty, Johnson joined Elon Law in 2006. After serving as associate dean of academic affairs, he was later appointed to the position of dean on February 3, 2009. The law school credits Johnson as being instrumental throughout the process that achieved its accreditation from the American Bar Association.

After earning a law degree from Columbia University, Johnson began a notable career in the public and private sector. Fresh out of college, he accepted a position as assistant counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs. Later, Johnson joined the Carter administration in the Executive Office of the President, serving as assistant general counsel for the White House Council on Wage and Price Stability.

Johnson’s teaching career began in 1981 when he joined the George Mason University law school.
