The Experiment In Self-Reliance (ESR) celebrated its 2012-13 fiscal year successes during its Annual Lemonade Social Gathering.

The outdoor event brought ESR clients. board members, public officials and personnel from partner agencies together.
Tommy Hickman Sr., VP of Operations at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, gave the keynote address. He stressed the importance of preventing problems instead of fixing them later on.

The Winston-Salem State cheerleaders performed and a number of awards were presented.

Barbara Grier received the Robert Law Self-Sufficiency Award for her upward mobility; ESR alum Anthony McNeill took home the Louise Wilson Community Service Award for fulfilling ESR’s mission of helping people help themselves; the ESR EITC Award, given to someone who takes advantage of ESR’s free income tax prep program, went to William Pena; and the New Century IDA Homeownership Award was presented to Gullimenia Fernanders, who graduated from the agency’s program and purchased a home.

Community Builders Awards, given to those who give their time and expertise to the organization, went to Ashley Harris, Laura MacFadden, Karl Yena and Dr. Frank James III.

ESR offers cutting-edge programs in the areas of self-sufficiency, first-time homeownership, economic literacy and transitional housing for the homeless. The agency serves more than 800 clients.
