Experiment in Self-Reliance (ESR) recently held its annual Charity Golf Tournament at Winston Lake Golf Course. Hurricanes Florence and Michael prevented the organization from hosting the tournament in October 2018. However, sunshine and smiles by all were shown on Friday, April 12, for the rescheduled tournament.

Golfers played the captain’s choice format at the tournament, which was sponsored by BB&T, RJ Reynolds, Peterson & Gordon Architects, and I.L Long Construction Company. This was ESR’s fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament. The agency wishes to express its gratitude to all our lead corporate sponsors, 37 hole sponsors, our golfers, and all other supporters.

Special thanks go out to:  XCARET, Pat’s Body Shop, Chester David, Rebecca Bender, Adam Neiberg, Pine Needle Xpress, Dr. Eric Sadlar, Dr. L’Tanya Joy Bailey, WSSU Foundation, Karl Yena, Minority Business Expo & Maximum Enterprise, Innovative Technology, Tonya Bellanger, Expo, Bobo’s Grill, Webster Bro’s, Whitley Reavis Ins., CMJ Containers, Dorsett Heat/Air, Clark S. ESR’s fundraising proceeds benefited the four core programs: Self Sufficiency-Inspire 340, Housing Services, the first time homeowners program called Individual Development Account (IDA) and Volunteer Income Tax Credit Program (Forsyth Free Taxes).

The ESR Golf Tournament committee consisted of Fred Bazemore, chairman & ESR’s Director of Programs and Operations; Victoria VonDohlen, co-chair; Hilda Moore, James Cherry, Keith Ferger, Dierdre Hill, BBQ caterer Bernard Terry and a host of staff, board members and volunteers. ESR is grateful to this committee, as well as Julius Reese and his team at Winston Lake Golf Course.

Fred Bazemore stated, “This year’s tournament was truly a success. With thunderstorms looming, all golf teams were able to get the entire round in before the skies opened up. What a great day it turned out to be! With the funds raised, we will be able to continue valuable services for all of our programs. A huge thanks again to all of our sponsors, golfers and volunteers.”

ESR’s mission is to help working low–income and chronically homeless individuals and families who are ready to help themselves achieve their full potential for functional, social and economic self-reliance through the design and application of cost-effective, individualized client success plans.
