Excerpts from the movie “42” will be shown during a Presbyterian Interracial Dialogue event on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 2380 Cloverdale Ave. The public is invited to take part.

“42,” is about Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the color-line in Major League Baseball. Scenes will be used to provoke discussion of racism. A former member of the Pond Giants, a Winston-Salem Negro League team, will be on hand to share his experiences.
“Most people nowadays have no idea of past segregation of the races in baseball,” said Elder Rachel Jackson, a member of Lloyd Presbyterian Church.

The purpose of the discussion is to learn from the past and apply that learning to present situations, according to organizers. The discussion will be led by Highland Presbyterian’s Randy Harris and John Downs. A hot dog supper will be served.
“‘42’ is a story of personal courage, of people with the guts to stand up against a situation that is both wrong and accepted by the masses,” said Harris, pastor of Highland Presbyterian.

The Presbyterian Interracial Dialogue is made up of members of six churches – Dellabrook, Grace, Highland, Lloyd, Parkway and Trinity Presbyterian. For more than 20 years, they have been dedicated to challenging  institutional racism in culture through Christian love.
