Hanes Magnet School takes fifth place at Future City Competition
Students from Hanes Magnet School brought home Fifth Place during the 26th annual Future City Competition held last week in Washington, D.C.
Since last fall, more than 40,000 middle school students from more than 1,000 schools in 41 U.S. regions, as well as teams from Canada, China, and the Middle East have been designing and building the cities of the future, centered on this year’s theme of “The Age Friendly City.”
For their rendition of the city Pyongyang, students from Hanes received $750 for their STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs. First prize, a trip to U.S. Space Camp and $7,500 was awarded to Edlin School, a school in Reston, Virginia.
As a STEM Magnet School, students at Hanes have the opportunity to take “Gateway to Technology” electives that are designed to encourage students to pursue careers in math, science and engineering. Hanes also offers several “STEM Clubs,” including Science Olympiad, the Rocket Club and the First Lego League.
