‘Go Red’ is tomorrow

As February is American Heart Month and tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 7) is National Wear Red Day, the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women program, locally sponsored in Forsyth County by Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, is recognizing two local phenomenal women in a very public way.

Heart health advocates Cheryl Lindsay and Sonja Williams are featured on the Go Red For Women billboard in Winston-Salem.

Lindsay, director of Human Resources and Inclusion/Diversity at Hanesbrands, is involved in increasing heart health awareness year-round. She is a member of the Forsyth County Go Red Leadership Council and is a supporter of health initiatives helping families prevent heart disease and stroke. Her Red H.E.A.R.R.T. program also holds annual community-focused events to encourage women to love and take care of their hearts. She founded the organization in honor of her mother, who died of heart disease.

Williams, a 2013 Forsyth County Go Red Woman honoree, has a family history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. She decided to not be a statistic. Williams is a personal and group fitness and Zumba instructor who uses her expertise to not only protect her heart, but those of other women.

“As women, we are over-stressed, over-worked and sometimes even feel over-whelmed,” Williams said. “Take a small amount of time in your life to do things you enjoy and make small changes (like diet and exercise) to impact your health in a positive way!”

Women and others are being asked to wear red tomorrow and take a photo of themselves and post it to www.facebook.com/triadAHA to help celebrate National Wear Red Day. Heart disease is the top killer of women in the U.S., taking one in every three women from our lives.

Red H.E.A.R.R.T will hold a series of free events at the Gateway YWCA tomorrow from 10 a.m. – 7:15 p.m.
