High school athletes shine
The R.J. Reynolds High School team of Jack Riazzi and Paul Yamane earned the doubles title Saturday morning in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s tennis championships at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh. They beat the Raleigh Millbrook pair of Chris Mahan and John Karlawish, 7-5, 6-3.
Riazzi and Yamane made it to the 2011 4-A doubles finals but lost to a Millbrook team in that one. Last year, Yamane and Chad Hoskins of R.J. Reynolds teamed to win the double’s crown.
Sloan Williams of Winston-Salem Prep brought home the first place medal in the girls’ 100 meter dash at the May 4 NCHSAA 1A Midwest Regional in Monroe. She also placed second in the 200-meter dash and in the 300-meter hurdles.
On Saturday, May 11, runners from North Forsyth performed well at the NCHSAA 3A Championships at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.
Gevontae Hardy took a solid 4th place in the final heat of the 110m hurdles in a personal best time of 15.18. He went on to run a respectable 300m race, finishing in 7th place.
He, along with Brandon Gambrell, Gerrick Harmon and Steve Stowe, took 9th place finish in the 4x400m relay, breaking their season best time by one second.
Gambrell also placed ninth in the high jump, a relatively new event for him. His best race of the day came in the 300m hurdles, where he ran a ground breaking 39.93, taking the bronze medal. He also took 7th place in the 110m hurdles.
