Special Recognition Award Honoree

Months before Hispanic voters helped to give victories to President Obama and others, the Hispanic American Democrats of Forsyth County was already celebrating a number of successes of its own.

The caucus was created to give voice to issues and concerns vital to local Hispanics, many of whom have become loyal and enthusiastic Democrats. Unfortunately, language barriers and immigration concerns keep many in this community silent. The Hispanic Democrats has become a voice for the voiceless and a powerful advocate.

Nowhere has the group been stronger than in shining light on law enforcement policies and procedures that seemingly unjustly target Hispanics. The Hispanic Democrats brought an urgency to a motorist checkpoint policy used by the police department that largely targeted communities of color. The efforts of the caucus helped create a community outcry that led to changes to the controversial policy.

The Hispanic American Democrats of Forsyth has The  set its sights on Raleigh, fighting the slew of anti-immigrant measures being churned out by conservatives in the General Assembly. The group has its hands full, but members are not short on resolve and wholly believe in the American Dream for all.

For standing for those whose circumstances often prevent them from standing for themselves, The Chronicle and the community are proud to give Special Recognition to the Hispanic American Democrats of Forsyth County.
