Jazz greats to perform at Duke
April 22
00:00 2013

On Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m., Duke Performances will present jazz greats bassist Dave Holland and pianist Kenny Barron in an intimate duo concert in the tradition of great duos such as Charlie Haden with Hank Jones and Ron Carter with Herbie Hancock.

One of jazz’s great bassists, Holland has inhabited the music’s adventurous edge ever since Miles Davis hired Holland to anchor his band in 1968 as the band rapidly morphed from an acoustic powerhouse to a pioneering fusion combo. After spending years exploring the outer reaches with Anthony Braxton and Sam Rivers, the British-born bassist started leading his own ensembles, which have served as a proving ground for a legion of celebrated improvisers.

An accomplished veteran of duo encounters, Holland joins forces with piano great Barron, an outstanding improviser, for a series of expansive instrumental duets.
Holland and Barron will perform together in Duke’s Reynolds Theater.

Tickets are on sale now and available online at dukeperformances.org, by phone at 919-684-4444, or in person at the University Box Office in the Bryan Center on Duke’s West Campus.
