Local seniors dominate the diamond

This past summer, the Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department hosted the Piedmont Plus Senior Softball Tournament for men and women 55 and older at Washington Park.

Nine of the 20 teams that competed were local; others represented cities like  Asheboro, Salisbury, Burlington, Charlotte and Hickory. In all, more than 360 seniors were involved in the tournament. All nine local teams qualified for the State Tournament. which took place last month in Raleigh.

Area teams that did well included: The Wanna Bees women 55+ team,  bronze medal; Wanna Bees women 60+ team, gold medal;  Lewisville Masters 55+, gold medal; Lewisville Masters 60+, gold medal.; Lewisville Masters 65+, silver medal; Le Bleu 65+, gold medal; and Winston 75+ team, silver medal.

Piedmont Plus Senior Games  is part of a statewide network of 53 local programs sanctioned by North Carolina Senior Games, Inc. NCSG is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing year-round health promotion and education for adults 55 years of age and better. Qualification for next year’s State Finals will be held April 11 – 19, 2013 at various sites throughout Winston-Salem
