Three local Sigma Beta Club members – Nigel McDaniel-Moore (10), Nasir McDaniel-Moore (15) and Alim Turner (15) – attended the 2017 National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference of the National Sigma Beta Club Foundation Inc. recently in Detroit, Michigan.

More than 100 young men from across the country attended the National Sigma Beta Club Leadership Conference (NSBCLC), which was held on the campus of Wayne State University on July 19-23.  One significant conference session with a partnership of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service focused on the theme “What Lives Around the Detroit River?”

While visiting the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge at Historic Fort Wayne, Sigma Betas learned about animal adaptation, bird conservation and migration, nature journaling, sturgeon monitoring, watershed simulation, wildlife crime scene investigation and wildlife tracking.

The NSBCLC held a Scholarship & Awards Breakfast at the Wayne State University Student Center Ballroom. During the breakfast, the Winston-Salem chapter received the Outstanding SBC Chapter of the Year Award for the Southeastern Region.  Club member Adrian Ellis-Wilkerson was awarded the Outstanding SBC Member Award for the Southeastern Region (ages 8-13) and he was awarded runner-up in the National SBC Member of the Year Award (ages 8-13).

After the Awards Breakfast, the young men went on a tour of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Founded in 1965, The Wright Museum opens minds and changes lives through the exploration and celebration of African-American history and culture.

The Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. is the sponsoring chapter for the local Sigma Beta Club, a youth auxiliary of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity for males ages 8 to 18.  The Sigma Beta Clubs offer unique opportunities to exemplify wholesome values, leadership skills, educational enhancement, business training and development, and social and cultural awareness to male youths at a most critical stage in their personal development.

The club’s motto is “Next Generation of Leaders Accepting the Responsibility and Loving the Challenge.”
