The Women’s Service Council of First Baptist Church Highland Avenue presented its “Say It With Music” concert on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Church’s own David R. Hedgley Memorial Fellowship Choir was featured, along with guests, The Spiritual Choir of Red Bank Baptist Church.

The David R. Hedgley Memorial Fellowship Choir was founded in 1971 as the First Baptist Spiritual Choir by David R. Hedgley and Josie White Simon. The Choir was intended to help increase church participation among young people. The Choir was renamed in honor of Dr. David R. Hedgley after his death.

Linda Pompey served as mistress of ceremonies for the program. She provided a brief history of the Women’s Service Council and the “Say It With Music” concert.  Founded in 1944, the Council sponsored two musical events during its first year: a concert by The Teacher’s College Band (now Winston-Salem State University)  and a recital by Dr. J. A. Dillard. A founding member of the Women’s Service Council, Alma S. Keen, titled the signature musical event, “Say It With Music.”

The David R. Hedgley Memorial Fellowship Choir, under the direction of LaSonia Hunter, presented a number of gospel songs, including a duet by Ianthe Nivens and Shirley Gray, and solos by members Tawanna Johnson, Faye Redd, Adrienne Brown-Ross, Tomeka Pompey-White and Patricia Dossier.  Accompanying the Choir were pianist Dr. Alfonza Williamson, percussionist Dannie Rogers and bassist Anthony Washington.  Janet Campbell, director of the Spiritual Choir of Red Bank, also served as its pianist. Campbell has been a past pianist for the David R. Hedgley Memorial Fellowship Choir.

The Program concluded with a presentation of a certificate of appreciation by Women’s Service Council President Kay Clark to Gold Star Council member Wilhelmena Lash. Dr. Darryl W. Aaron, pastor of First Baptist,  provided the benediction. A repast of fruit, cheese and cookies and punch was served in the lower auditorium.
