Morehouse Glee Club coming to Bennett
The Morehouse College Glee Club will be in concert at Bennett College on Saturday, March 23 at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public, the concert will be performed in the historic Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel.
The Morehouse College Glee Club celebrated 100 years of its musical legacy throughout 2011. Through its tradition, the Glee Club has an impressive history and seeks to secure its future through even greater accomplishments. It is the mission of the Morehouse College Glee Club to maintain a high standard of musical excellence.
The Glee Club has performed the national anthem with Natalie Cole for Super Bowl XXVIII; participated with Stevie Wonder, Gloria Estefan and Trisha Yearwood in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta; performed for the Witness Concert with the Plymouth Music Series; and premiered the work “Of Dreams and Other Possibilities,” written by Patrice Rushen.
In August 2011, the Glee Club performed for events leading to the dedication of the King Monument on the National Mall and later that year recorded “Zachary and the Scaly Bark Tree” for Spike Lee’s movie “Red Hook Summer.”
The group was founded in 1911 by Kemper Harreld, who led the group for 44 years. The current director is David E. Morrow, a 1980 Morehouse graduate.
