Second annual student essay contest to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month

By Judie Holcomb-Pack
The Chronicle, Forsyth Historic Resources Commission, and Winston-Salem Writers are partnering to hold the second annual essay contest for 6th-8th graders in Forsyth County schools to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month in May. Parents, grandparents and educators, here is an opportunity to encourage your middle schoolers to be creative, sharpen their research and writing skills, and possibly win a prize!
The Forsyth County Student Essay Contest for 6th-8th graders will be accepting submissions until April 10. Students may choose from one of three prompts to write about. The article should be between 250-300 words in length on one of the following topics:
*Interview a senior citizen in your community and ask them what school was like when they were in your grade. How were things different; the same?
*If you were a tour guide, what would you show people in your community that makes it unique?
*Describe something – like a home, building, park, etc. – in your community that you hope will be there 50 years from now. Why do you think that is important?
Submissions will be accepted from March 3-April 10. The top three essays will receive monetary prizes provided by Winston-Salem Writers and will be printed in the Chronicle during the month of May, National Historic Preservation Month.
Submissions can be emailed to preservation@cityofws.org with the subject of Student Essay Contest or by mail to the Historic Resources Commission staff, Michelle M. McCullough, 100 E. First Street, P.O. Box 2511, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.
Submissions should not have the student’s name on them but should include a cover page with the student’s name, address, parent’s or guardian’s name, phone number, email address, school attending, age, and grade. All submissions must be received by April 10, 2025.
Winners will be notified no later than May 1, 2025.
