ACC basketball legend Randolph Childress was honored Sept. 12 at the Winston-Salem Dinner of Champions, an event hosted by the Central North Carolina Chapter of the National MS Society.

The dinner was held at Wake Forest University’s Bridger Field House at BB&T Field. WXII’s Cameron Kent served as the master of ceremonies. Regina Lyalls, a Winston-Salem resident, shared her story of living with MS. Lyalls takes part in Bike MS events all over the country with “The Amazing Race” host Phil Keoghan.

Childress, a standout at Wake from 1991 – 1995, gave the keynote address. He talked about his mother, who lives with MS, and how her illness has affected his family. Childress, a WFU assistant basketball coach, also shared tales from his playing days.

Childress’ family was in attendance, as were WFU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jeff Bzdelik, former Wake coach Dave Odom, for whom Childress played, and former WFU athletic director Gene Hooks.

“It was a privilege to honor such an extraordinary champion for the MS Society, Winston-Salem and Wake Forest University,” said Cameron Harris, the MS Society’s director of Development and Operations. “The MS Society is grateful to Randolph Childress for his role in helping us end the devastating effects of MS.”

Funds raised during the luncheon will be used by the Central North Carolina Chapter of the MS Society to help support people affected by MS and fund research to create a world free of MS, an often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.
