Taylor

Travis Taylor has been named the new principal of Carver High School.

He replaces Ronald Travis, who will be the principal of Main Street Academy.
Taylor has been the principal of Lexington Senior High School since 2011. Previously, he served as principal of the Southern School of Engineering in Durham from 2007 to 2011 and the principal of East Lee Middle School in Lee County from 2005 to 2007.

Taylor also has experience as an assistant principal and science and math teacher for Durham Public Schools.

He was named Lexington City Schools Principal of the Year in 2013. He also was named the 2012 Principal of the Year by the N.C. Association for Scholastic Activities for increasing student participation in scholastic activities and competitions.

Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from N.C. Central University and a master’s degree in school administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Last month, Superintendent Beverly Emory said she wanted an experienced educator to fill Travis’ shoes.

“My biggest need and requirement there is that we have to have somebody who has experience and we have to have somebody who understands the Carver community, someone who will commit to staying at Carver for a long period of time,” she said. “The need for the Carver community is to have some stability there.”

School officials also announced the hiring of Chris Nichols as the new principal of the Career Center.
Nichols has been the principal of Forbush High School since 2010. He was named the Yadkin County Schools Principal of the Year in 2013. He replaces Dennis Moser, who is retiring.

Nichols worked in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for more than 10 years before leaving for Forbush. He was an assistant principal at Parkland High School from 2005 to 2010 and an assistant principal at Paisley IB Magnet School from 2000 to 2005.

Nichols also taught math at Parkland and Table Rock Middle School in Burke County. He also is an adjunct instructor at Wake Forest University.

Nichols earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education and a master’s degree in school administration from Appalachian State University and a doctorate in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Both principals will be in place for the start of the 2014-15 school year.
