When the pandemic shut down much of the city, it gave Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks department an opportunity to review each of the city’s recreation centers to determine how they could best serve the citizens who used them. They saw a need for a location dedicated to serving seniors and designated Brown & Douglas an Active Adult Center. This is the only designated senior center in Winston-Salem.

Ahead of Father’s Day weekend, the Women’s Gun Violence Prevention Team is hosting a dinner on Friday evening designed to celebrate men in the community and invite them to join the fight against senseless gun violence.
A relaxing day at the park was interrupted by gunfire earlier this week when William Coleman Scott, 26, endangered the lives of dozens of innocent people when he opened fire on police officers in Hanes Park, a mere hours after it is believed he killed his mother and grandmother.
