The Winston-Salem State University Rams, despite having 12 new players for the 2013-14 season, were predicted last Thursday to finish first in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Southern Division.

The prediction was announced at the 2013 CIAA Annual Basketball Media Day at the Sheraton Charlotte Hotel. WSSU seniors Tyre Desmore, a guard, and Preston Scott, a forward, were named to the 2013 CIAA Preseason All-Conference team as well.

Desmore returns after playing valuable minutes last season, where he averaged 4.3 points and 2.1 rebounds. He was also second on the team in assists with 54, and contributed 24 steals.

“We are also looking for big things from Tyre Desmore. Tyre played a lot of important minutes for us last year, and we are expecting him to step up and be a leader,” said Head Coach Bobby Collins.
Ross started 17 of 33 games last year at Western Carolina.  He averaged 6 points and 4 rebounds per game, while  shooting an impressive 51 percent from the floor.  Originally, Preston is from Fayetteville, where he was a standout player at Seventy-First High School and a McDonald’s All-American nominee.

“(Ross) can do a number of things, and we look for big things from him,” said Collins. “He is an incredible athlete that’s strong, can rebound and is just a very good basketball player.”
The WSSU Rams will open the season Friday, Nov. 8, when they will host Ohio-based Notre Dame College at the C.E. Gaines Center.
