Coat giveaways are nothing new to this community. Every year there are at least a dozen different coat drives and giveaways throughout the city. But earlier this week Red H.E.A.R.R.T (Help, Educate, & Reduce Risk, Today) an initiative that advocates heart health in children, teens and women, kicked off a coat giveaway with a unique distribution strategy.

Instead of passing out the coats and jackets the old fashion way, the coats will be hung on public fences, so anyone who is in need can just walk by and grab a coat. And anyone who has a donation can just stop by with a hanger and add it to the collection.

To kick off the weeklong giveaway, on Jan. 10, Cheryl Lindsay, founder of Red H.E.A.R.R.T., was joined by Mayor Allen Joines and members of the local police and fire departments. There was also representation in attendance from Samaritan Ministries, the Rescue Mission, the Bethesda Center, Salvation Army and Union Baptist Church.

The Warm for Winter Holidays coat collection and giveaway will continue through Monday, Jan. 16. Donations can be dropped off outside the Beaty Safety Center overflow parking lot near Samaritan Ministries, 414 Northwest Blvd. and the Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem, at the corner of 1255 Northwest Blvd. and Trade St.
